Exercise is Powerful Medicine - Study 7 of 14

Exercise & Cancer

2:11 minutes

If you are at risk for developing Cancer, or if you have been treated for it (chemo- and/or radiation therapy), talk to your doctor and an OptiHealth Medical-Fitness Technician about a Therapeutic Fitness Training program as part of your medical treatment plan.
Video Notes
People who are moderately active have a 55% lower risk of getting Colon Cancer than people who are inactive.

Higher levels of physical activity do not provide much more protection, but the dose response supports a causal relationship.

The bulk of the health benefit from exercise is realized at the moderate level of exercise.

Conclusion #1: Regular Exercise prevents Colon Cancer.

People with higher levels of fitness have a lower risk of dying from any kind of Cancer
  • Moderate Fitness Level decreases risk of dying from Cancer by 38%
  • High Fitness level decreases risk of dying from Cancer by 55%

Exercise is especially effective in protecting against:
  • Colon Cancer
  • Breast Cancer
  • Prostate Cancer

Results were even better when tobacco-related cancers were removed from the study.

Avoiding exposure to tobacco (smoking) is the best way to prevent tobacco-related Cancers.

Although exercise does not protect much against tobacco-related cancers, getting regular exercise helps smokers to quit, stay quit, and avoid gaining weight after quitting.

Note: Smoking is a major cause of cancer and is linked to at least 16 different types, including lung, laryngeal, and bladder cancers. Smoking is responsible for about one-third of all cancer deaths in the United States. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

Conclusion #2: Fitness prevents and protects against all types of Cancer.

Note: Many other studies have demonstrated that regular exercise improves Cancer Survival rates as part of their medical treatment.
