Exercise is Powerful Medicine - Study 10 of 14

Exercise & Depression

2:19 minutes

If you are being treated for Depression, or if you have a history of Depression, talk to your doctor and an OptiHealth Medical-Fitness Technician about a Therapeutic Fitness Training program as part of your medical treatment plan.
Video Notes
Study:
  • 156 clinically depressed and sedentary persons.
  • Randomly divided into 2 therapy groups.
  • Medication Only Group & Exercise Only Group.
  • Re-evaluated after 16 weeks of therapy.

Depression improved in both groups equally.

Exercise is as effective as anti-depressant medication in treating clinical Depression.

Mental abilities were also evaluated:
  • Concentrating, Organizing, Planning, Memorizing, etc.

Mental Abilities improved in only the Exercise Group.
The Medication Group did not improve in Mental Abilities.

Conclusion: Recovery from clinical Depression is better when treated with exercise than with medication.
